Legal highs
Legal highs, also known as psychoactive substances
These are drugs that produce the same or similar effects as illegal drugs but are not banned by the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. To get around the law, they are often sold under the name of a different product, such as plant food or research chemicals. They are however covered by the Psychoactive Substances Act 2016.
This Act makes it illegal to supply any new psychoactive substances in the UK for human consumption, this includes selling or giving them away for free.
Just because they are legal does not mean they are safe. There are still many risks associated with taking them. These products usually haven’t been researched and tested to find out the effects and whether or not they should be made illegal. This means they could be dangerous.
