Our SENCO is a highly skilled and experienced professional who has an NVQ Level 3 qualification in childcare and a Level 3 SENCO qualification and has attended training on supporting children with Autism, Autism Awareness, supporting speech & language development including Crocodile Groups and Sensory circuits, Paediatric first aid training and is one of our centres Designated Safeguarding Leads.  Our SENCO is experienced in applying for EHCPs and supports families through the whole process. When your child is ready for the next move to reception class our SENCO will support the process to ensure a smooth transition for both the child and family.

All staff training includes; Epi Pen training, Supporting children with Autism, Autism Awareness, Toilet training, Paediatric First Aid, Makaton, Sleep routines, Trauma informed practice, Paediatric first aid, Safeguarding, Epilepsy training, speech & language and sensory circuits.

Our outstanding OFSTED rating reflects the high quality inclusive provision we provide for all children including children with SEND.   We are a PELSEND nursery, and have 3 PELSEND spaces for children with severe and complex needs. Our staff team have developed a broad understanding of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities and know how to support children to break down the barriers they face and to ensure they have the best possible learning outcomes.  Staff experience includes working with children with autism, global developmental delays, downs syndrome, Cleft palette and children with feeding tubes.

We have a large team of highly qualified staff including two early years teachers, one teacher with QTS and a SENCO and a team of 5 SEN support staff who are based in the nursery and under 3’s rooms.

Some children will join our setting with identified needs or may already be on the waiting list for an autism assessment and some children’s need may only begin to emerge when they are in the setting.  For children who have been identified as having SEN or disabilities or waiting for assessment we will work with the child, parents and any outside professionals to set individualised, achievable targets to help remove any barriers the child has to learning and allow your child to participate and progress and to achieve the best possible outcomes.  For children whose needs may only begin to emerge once in the setting we will begin with the graduated approach which is a four part cycle of assess, plan, do and review.  This allows the gathering of evidence through conversations with parents, observations and getting to know the child before planning short term targets to support the child’s learning.

At New River Green Children’s Centre we know that early identification of children with SEND is important to ensure that we can quickly put in place the right level of support package which is tailored to the individual child. We will do this with input from the child, parents, key worker, SENCO and any other professionals working with the child and family.  We ensure that throughout their time at our setting that the child and family are actively involved in all planning and decision making. We support children by differentiating activities when needed to ensure that every child has access to our fully inclusive curriculum.

We deliver high quality interventions to support children with SEND including small groups activities, 1:1 focus sessions, Intensive Interactions, Attention Builders, Language Groups, Sensory Circuits. We also support children using our Trauma informed Practise Training.

We work in partnership with specialist partners including but not limited to; Speech & Language Therapists, Nurse Practitioners, CAMHS, Occupational Therapists, Social Workers, Family Support Workers, Physio Therapists, Family Engagement Workers, Area SENCO, Educational Psychologist.
