School Nursing
Each school in Islington has a named school nurse who is based at a local health centre and visits the school on a regular basis. School nurses and their teams carry out health assessments and immunisations at targeted ages. Health promotion is a main part of their role together with support for disabled children, children with additional needs and those in need of protection.
School nurses offer advice and information about a wide range of health issues and make referrals to other agencies where appropriate. They also provide training for school staff on specific health conditions. In secondary schools, school nurses run extended school clinics with a focus on addressing key public health priorities such as teenage pregnancy, obesity and mental health.
