Short Breaks Service

Short Breaks are a way of giving parents of disabled children a break from their caring responsibilities.

The work of the Islington Short Breaks Service includes:

  • Consultation with the children and young people with disabilities, parents and carers, providers and other professionals on the development of the local Short Breaks Offer.
  • Co-producing the publication of the Short Breaks Offer (Annual Short Breaks Statement)
  • Assessing the eligibility for Universal Plus Short Breaks and Targeted Short Breaks for the parent/ carers of disabled children
  • Commissioning charities, companies and schools to deliver a range of range of after school clubs, holiday playschemes and 1:1 agencies to provide short breaks
  • Communication with parents and carers assessed as eligible for Universal Plus Short Breaks and Targeted Short Breaks
  • Managing the direct payments to parents and carers who choose to use the Short Breaks Cash Alternative to access short breaks
  • Managing the payments, attendance and quality checks for Short Breaks services that are commissioned by the Council
  • Facilitating a termly forum for local providers of Short Breaks services
  • Working with others to encourage the inclusion of disabled children in out of school activities so that parents and carers can access short breaks

Referral Details

Parents and carers who are not already known to the Short Breaks Service can request an assessment for Universal Plus Short Breaks or Targeted Short Breaks using the Assessment and Referral Tool.

Parents and carers that are already assessed as eligible for Universal Plus Short Breaks or Targeted Short Breaks can organise the use of their Short Breaks hours by phone or email.
