Community Paediatric Dietetics Service

The Community Paediatric Dietetics service provides assessment and advice on feeding, nutrition and diet to infants, children, adolescents and their carers.

We work closely with doctors, hospitals, community and school health/education services by developing and putting in place individual plans for children with medical conditions that can be managed by diet.

Our service is provided through clinic appointments, home visits and joint working with other therapists and health professionals

We continue working with the infants, children and young people who use our service for as long as they need it up to 18 years of age (or 19 year if the young person is in a special school)

Our service provides for children and young people (0-18 years or 19 years if the young person is in a special school) who have:

  • behavioural feeding difficulties including children on the autism spectrum with selective eating
  • specific nutrient deficiencies e.g. iron deficiency anaemia

  • home enteral tube feeding
  • gastrointestinal disorders e.g. coeliac disease, crohn’s disease, short bowel, malabsorption
  • reflux/ gastro-oesphageal reflux/ gord/ persistent vomiting
  • diarrhoea
  • constipation

We also provide advice for:

  • pre-term infants with feeding problems
  • vegan and vegetarian children and young people
  • healthy eating (for children who are not overweight or obese)
  • overweight and obesity (aged up to 4 years only)

In addition, we work with the Early Years Development Team which works with children under 5 years old who have complex additional needs and carry out consultations in the child’s home.  Home visits are also made to those children who are housebound or need multidisciplinary input

We work as part of the Social Communication Team providing a joint dietetic and occupational therapy led Eat Well Clinic for advice to improve eating and nutrition for children diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Condition.

We see children and young people in Richard Cloudesley Primary and Secondary schools and in The Bridge Primary and Secondary schools.
