Samuel Rhodes School - Primary Department

Samuel Rhodes School is one of the special schools in Islington, each of which provide support for children with particular special educational needs (SEN). The Government says that children with special educational needs and disabilities must be included in mainstream schools wherever possible.

All Islington schools and education settings are provided with additional resources to help children with special educational needs (SEN) and disabilities. This recognises that children learn in different ways and have different kinds and levels of SEN that may need help for only a short time, or for many years. There is a strong agreement at all levels in Islington that children's needs should be met wherever possible in mainstream schools, and we understand that for nearly all Islington children, this is where they will receive their education. But we also understand that for a small number of children it may be that a mainstream school is not appropriate, or at least not for the whole of their school career. So to meet the broad range of children's needs and parental preferences we also have a range of specialists provision in Islington. All of our special schools have a very important role in providing support and training to mainstream schools in Islington. Samuel Rhodes School leads one of the service areas in the Borough, for children with difficulties in learning and cognition. It has an outreach team which advises mainstream schools and supports the pupils with learning difficulties. The Primary Department is now located on the Montem Community Campus, Hornsey Road. The latest report about this school is available on Ofsted's website.

Samuel Rhodes School is not currently recognised as a 'Healthy School'.

It is usually necessary to carry out a detailed investigation to find out exactly what a child's special educational needs are and what extra help they may need before a special school place is considered. This process is called a Education, Health and Care assessment.

It is only necessary if the child's school or education setting cannot provide all the help that a child needs, or if a child is identified as having severe disabilities at a very early age.

A parent, school or education setting can ask the local authority to carry out a statutory assessment. The local authority will consider information about the child's progress at school, advice from other professionals who support them and the parents views.

Find further information on the Education, Health and Care assessment.
