Health Activities In Caledonian Park, Islington, and Talacre Gardens, Camden

This page lists activities that took place between late September and early November 2020 for the Parks for Health project. All the activities observed coronavirus social distancing guidelines and were delivered by approved people and organisations. All deliverers were trained and experienced in the activity they offer.

Caledonian Park:

  • Craft activities for people aged 65+

Talacre Gardens:

  • Green Gym

Caledonian Park

Meeting point for all activities: Caledonian Clock Tower, N7 9TP

Craft Activities For People Aged 65+

  • Mondays 11am-1pm

  • 28 September to 2 November

  • High-quality education nature craft activities, such as: using natural materials on natural fabric to create an item; design inspired by something in the park; lino printing; making cards; nature weaving

  • Delivered by Bronya Deutsch and assisted by Lizzy Cook, The Garden Classroom

  • Bronya has many years’ experience as a facilitator and trained actor, storyteller and yoga teacher. Lizzy is a qualified textiles teacher and Royal Horticultural Society level 2 gardener

Gardening

  • Fridays 11am-1pm

  • 25 September to 30 October

  • Delivered by Fiona MacKenzie-Cardy, Park Ranger, Islington Council

Gentle Walking

  • Tuesdays 2pm for 45-60 minutes

  • 22 September to 3 November 

  • Delivered by Colin Chester, Parks & Heritage Outreach Officer, or colleagues who work in the Greenspace team at Islington Council

 Mindfulness

  • Fridays 2pm-3pm

  • 25 September to 30 October 

  • Delivered by Colin Chester, Parks & Heritage Outreach Officer, Islington Council

  • Colin is a qualified meditation teacher and a member of the Complimentary Medical Association

Mindfulness and yoga       

  • Gentle mat-based yoga: Wednesdays 11.30am-12.30pm

  • Chair-based yoga (ideal for anyone with limited mobility or stability): Thursdays 1-2pm

  • Gentle mat-based yoga: 23 September to 4 November. Chair-based yoga 24 September to 29 October

  • Delivered by Jessica Green, Age UK Islington

  • Jessica has six years’ experience and has taught all ages and abilities

 Tai chi

  • Two groups. Attend either Tuesdays 10-11am or Tuesdays 11am-12noon

  • A large part of Taijiquan and Qigong consists of feeling where your weight is, and moving from leg to leg

  • 22 September to 3 November

  • Delivered by Hendrika Mann, Age UK Islington

  • Hendrika has taught tai chi since 2003 including 15 years in community settings and care homes

YES CLUB (Yoga, Exercise and Song)                 

  • Wednesdays 12.45pm for 45-60 minutes       

  • Gentle yoga, movement, breath work and exercise for physical and mental well-being, improving strength and flexibility in mind, body and spirit

  • 23 September to 4 November
  • Delivered by Kate Comer

  • Kate is highly qualified and has been teaching to all levels and ages since 2007

Talacre Gardens

Meeting point for all activities is outside Talacre Community Sports Centre, NW5 3AF

Green Gym

  • Two sessions on Mondays: 11am-12pm and 1-2pm

  • Green Gyms are fun sessions where participants are guided in practical conservation activities such as planting trees, sowing meadows and establishing wildlife areas

  • 21 September to 2 November

  • Delivered by Trudi Wilkinson, TCV (The Conservation Volunteers)

  • Trudi has been delivering Green Gym activities for five years

Health walk

  • Wednesdays 9.15am for 9.30 start, to 10.30am   

  • The walk is aimed at all levels of walker, including people with mobility issues. Under 18s to be accompanied by an adult. Sorry, no dogs

  • 23 September to 4 November

  • Delivered by Jo Lynch, Health Connector & Wellbeing Support Worker, Kentish Town Central Primary Care Network, which covers the Caversham Group Practice, the Parliament Hill Medical Centre and the Prince of Wales Medical Centre

  • Jo is a qualified health walk leader

This session is only for people registered with either the Caversham Group Practice, the Parliament Hill Medical Centre or the Prince of Wales Medical Centre. 

Silence, story and movement in nature

  • Mondays 9-10.30am

  • The session offers different ways of experiencing the natural world and getting to know each other and ourselves. Activities include: sitting still and breath meditation if seating allows; nature oriented story telling; Qigong, a traditional Chinese movement meditation

  • 21 September to 2 November

  • Delivered by Rod Sugden and Dr Jane Riddiford, Global Generation

  • Rod is an active storyteller and music maker and practiced qigong for the last 15 years. Jane is founding director of Global Generation and has worked with nature practices over the last 30 years

  • This session is only for people registered with either the Caversham Group Practice, the Parliament Hill Medical Centre or the Prince of Wales Medical Centre.

The health activites are part of the Parks for Health project, which is led by Camden and Islington councils and Camden and Islington Public Health, and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the National Trust, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, the Greater London Authority and London Sport.
