Children's Physiotherapy Service

A physiotherapist that specialises in working with children and young people looks at how the child moves, and then works to help them achieve their ‘optimum physical development’. The aim is not just to help them move, but to help them move to the best of their ability, as through movement children and young adults learn about themselves and their environment.

Physiotherapy is holistic in nature, and we work as part of multi-disciplinary and multi-agency teams. Following an initial assessment of the child's general development and specific physical function and abilities, ie. whether or not they can sit unsupported, or whether they can stand but not walk; the Physiotherapist will discuss with the parents/carers the immediate and long-term requirements and make plans for appropriate treatment, which will be regularly reviewed and updated.

Children may also be assessed for special equipment / orthoses as appropriate. Children/ young adults will be assessed and treated in the most appropriate setting. This may be at home, at school/ nursery, or in Children’s Centres. On reaching adulthood, the young person is referred on to the appropriate adult service in consultation with the young person, parents/ carers and the Team.
