Roads and pavements in Islington

There are 240 kilometres of road in Islington. Transport for London is responsible for some of the main roads in Islington such as Upper Street, Archway Road, Holloway Road, Pentonville Road, Farringdon Road and Seven Sisters Road. To find about any problems on these roads, go to the TfL website. The Council is responsible for all other public roads in the borough.

Islington Council does the following.

• Inspect all roads and pavements at least every six months.
• Repair and resurface roads and pavements. Sometimes this involves major schemes to strengthen roads.
• Monitor work carried out by gas, electricity, water and telecommunication companies. These account for most roadworks in the borough.
• Provide cross-overs or access to driveways. There is a charge to cover our costs for this service.
• Monitor and license developments and building work which affects the roads or pavements.
• Look after street furniture such as signs and bollards. To make our streets more accessible, we will remove any unnecessary street furniture. Where there are double yellow lines, we no longer have to have time plates showing when the controls apply. This means that we can remove many signs.
• Respond to road-related emergencies, such as collapsed roads and dangerous trees.
